The Pittsburgh Pirates did everything they could this weekend to help the St. Louis Cardinals gain ground in the N.L. Central Standings. After two close losses on Friday and Saturday to their divisional foes, the Bucs were beaten easily this afternoon at Busch Stadium by a 7-0 score. With the victory, the Cardinals completed a three game weekend sweep of the Pirates.
The Bucs fell to ten games under .500 with the loss and their starter, Ivan Nova, lost his 13th game of the year, giving up five runs on five hits in five innings. Michael Wacha, the Cardinals’ starter, gave up five hits and struck out seven in eight innings.
Yadier Molina was the star of the day for St. Louis, contributing two hits and five RBIs on the day. Andrew McCutchen had two hits for Pittsburgh, but there was never any threat against Wacha and company.
After singling home a run in the first inning, Molina blasted a three run homerun in the third to put the Cardinals in firm control of the game at 4-0. A solo homerun by Randal Grichuk in the fourth and a sac fly by Wacha in the sixth made it 6-0, and a sac fly by Molina in the seventh made it a 7-0 score, which would be the final.
It seems the Pirates are going through the motions at this point, and their opponents are taking advantage of it. We said weeks ago that these division matchups down the stretch would tell the tale of who the better teams are in this division, and clearly the Pirates are on the short end of that stick. They are now ten games under .500, and are not looking like a team that is going to finish up strong.
Pittsburgh will continue their trek against the N.L. Central as they travel to Miller Park for the first of three against the Milwaukee Brewers tomorrow night. Steven Brault will take the mound for the Bucs against Brandon Woodruff for the Brewers.
