Tonight, Gerrit Cole pitched one of the best games of his career. Unfortunately, the Pittsburgh Pirates offense couldn’t support him with even a single run. The Chicago Cubs scored a run in the top of the ninth and went on to beat the Bucs 1-0 at PNC Park.
Cole was dominant tonight, giving up just two hits and four walks with eight strikeouts in eight innings of work. His mound opponent, Jose Quintana, gave up six hits and a walk in six innings of work.
The Pirates’ best chance to score came in the bottom of the sixth, as Andrew McCutchen and David Freese led off with back to back singles. But Jose Osuna grounded into a double play, and Sean Rodriguez grounded into a force out to end the inning quickly.
The Cubs scored the game’s lone run in the top of the ninth inning. With Daniel Hudson pitching, Alex Avila smacked a run-scoring triple to right field, scoring Leonys Martin to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. The Pirates would go down in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
This was a difficult loss for the Pirates. Cole pitched one of the best games of his career, tossing eight shutout innings against one of the best offenses in baseball. In fact, he gave up just two hits the entire night, and the bullpen gave up a run in one inning. Not only did Cole not earn the victory despite his great outing, but his team somehow found a way to lose.
The Pirates still have a chance to earn the series victory with a win tomorrow night at PNC Park. Jon Lester will take the mound for Chicago against Jameson Taillon for Pittsburgh. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
