Pirates Blanked By Cardinals In Finale

Today marked the final time in 2019 that the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals would play.  St. Louis dominated the season series, so it was fitting that they would pull a 2-0 pitchers duel win to close out the series.  James Marvel made his Major League debut for Pittsburgh today and gave fans a glimmer of what we hope is a solid career in a Pirates uniform.

Marvel worked five innings and allowed two runs on four hits to go with two walks and two strikeouts.  The first of those two runs came in the fifth inning when Harrison Bader hit an RBI single to shallow left center to bring home Matt Carpenter.  The final run of the day occurred in the sixth on a Paul Goldschmidt double to right center that plated Kolten Wong.

The Buccos would use four pitchers out of the bullpen to cover the final four innings.  Yacksel Rios pitched the sixth inning, while Wei-Chung Wang worked the seventh and allowed a hit and a walk during that time.  Kyle Crick came on in the eighth and struck out two batters, while walking one.  The ninth belonged to Yefry Ramirez.

Jack Flaherty collected his tenth win of the season this afternoon after working eight innings.  He would allow five hits, while striking out ten and walking one batter.  Flaherty then gave way to Carlos Martinez who earned his 19th save of the season, while striking out one batter.

Pittsburgh only collected five hits on the day with Melky Cabrera collecting two of them.  The Pirates didn’t show much life in the final two games of this series, which is ultimately why the Cardinals took this series.  The Buccos will now hit the road for their next seven games.  The first four of those seven will take place against the San Francisco Giants starting tomorrow night.
