The Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs met for the final time in 2019 tonight. The end result was a 9-5 victory and series sweep for Pittsburgh. The Pirates led for all nine innings and got one final good start from Joe Musgrove.
Musgrove worked six innings tonight and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Those three runs came in the sixth inning. The first two came on an Ian Happ double to right field. Happ then came in to score on a Jonathan Lucroy groundout to the pitcher.
The Buccos got off to a hot start against Chicago starter Jose Quintana. In the first inning Pablo Reyes brought home Melky Cabrera and Jose Osuna with a triple to left center field. Two more runs would score in the third on an Osuna double to right. The final run of the inning crossed the plate on a Jacob Stallings single to left center.
The fifth inning saw Osuna score on a fielding error, and Reyes come home when Jake Elmore hit a single to left. Pittsburgh scored their final two runs of the night in the sixth. The first came when Adam Frazier singled to left center field. Run number two occurred when Cabrera doubled to right to bring in Frazier.
The Cubs were able to score two more runs in the seventh, but it was not enough to avoid being swept. The Pirates will begin their final series of the season tomorrow night when they welcome the Cincinnati Reds home to PNC Park for three games. Game one will feature a pitching matchup between Steven Brault and Anthony DeSclafani.
