Dario Agrazal and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night at PNC Park, officially eliminating them from playoff contention with a 4-2 win on the north shore.
Agrazal pitched well, self-proclaimed his best start of the season, giving up two runs on six hits in six innings of work. Francisco Liriano and Michael Feliz each pitched a scoreless inning, setting the table for Keone Kela, who earned his first save of the season.
The Cubs did take the early lead on a RBI single by Ian Happ in the second inning, scoring Willson Contreras. The Pirates responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Erik Gonzalez’s RBI double tied the game, and a single by Jake Elmore put them in front, 2-1.
Happ homered in the seventh to tie the game, but the Pirates scored another pair of runs in the next inning to take the lead back for good. A wild pitch by Cubs’ pitcher David Phelps allowed Jose Osuna to score, and a sacrifice fly by Gonzalez scored the team’s fourth run.
As we have been saying for the past few weeks, there hasn’t been much for the Pirates to play for lately other than to play spoiler against other playoff hopefuls. This series, they helped to officially eliminate the Cubs from any hopes of a playoff berth. With the loss on Wednesday, the Cubs will have been assured of a long offseason looking back on what could have been. There could certainly be a lot of changes made to both of these organizations this offseason. For now, though, these two teams will meet up for the final time in 2019 on Thursday night at PNC Park.
