Kuhl Snake Bitten By Diamondbacks

Chad Kuhl was supposed to start the finale of the Pittsburgh Pirates series with the Milwaukee Brewers last night.  When that game was postponed because of rain, Kuhl was then slated to start game one of a four game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight.  Kuhl must have not studied the lineup very well, because Arizona hit him hard and often in an 9-3 victory over Pittsburgh.

Kuhl looked like he was throwing batting practice to the Diamondbacks during his two innings of work.  It all started in the first inning when Daniel Descalso hit a sac fly to score John Jay.  Descalso would cross home plate on a Ketel Marte homer to right.  In the second inning Jay would bring in two runs with a double to right.  He then came in to score on a Paul Goldschmidt single to right center.

Cubs Spoil Cole’s Outing, Beat Bucs 1-0

Tonight, Gerrit Cole pitched one of the best games of his career.  Unfortunately, the Pittsburgh Pirates offense couldn’t support him with even a single run.  The Chicago Cubs scored a run in the top of the ninth and went on to beat the Bucs 1-0 at PNC Park.

Cole was dominant tonight, giving up just two hits and four walks with eight strikeouts in eight innings of work.  His mound opponent, Jose Quintana, gave up six hits and a walk in six innings of work.

The Pirates’ best chance to score came in the bottom of the sixth, as Andrew McCutchen and David Freese led off with back to back singles.  But Jose Osuna grounded into a double play, and Sean Rodriguez grounded into a force out to end the inning quickly.

The Cubs scored the game’s lone run in the top of the ninth inning...

Pirates Lose To Cubs…..Again

The Pittsburgh Pirates are still playing baseball, though it doesn’t have much meaning at this point.  For the second night in a row their offense only managed one run, while the Chicago Cubs had a breakout inning to put the game away.  After the final out was recorded, Pittsburgh would be the losers of a 4-1 game.

Chad Kuhl pitched 5.1 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits, while striking out seven and walking three.  All three of those runs would come in the sixth inning.  The scoring started when Ben Zobrist hit a solo homer to deep right center.  Alex Avila would single home a run later in the inning.  The final run would come via a Jason Heyward sac fly.

Jake Arrieta would hold the Pirates in check for six innings, striking out four and walking two...

Cubs Beat Pirates 6-1

After taking two of three from the Cincinnati Reds this weekend, the Pittsburgh Pirates continued their N.L. Central road trip against the first place Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.  Tonight, the Bucs missed plenty of scoring opportunities on offense and played sloppy defense on their way to a 6-1 loss to the Cubs.

Trevor Williams started for Pittsburgh tonight, battling his way through five innings against the high powered Chicago offense.  Williams was tagged with the loss tonight, giving up two runs on six hits.  His mound opponent, Mike Montgomery, pitched very well, giving up one run on six hits in seven innings of work.

An RBI single by Ian Happ in the bottom of the second inning scored Anthony Rizzo to get the Cubs on the board...
