Pirates Score Eight In First, Beat Cardinals 11-6

Tonight’s game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates featured a matchup between two pitchers who have had significant success against each other in the past – Lance Lynn and Gerrit Cole.  Tonight, however, both pitchers struggled, and the Pirates jumped out to a huge early lead and went on to win 11-6 at PNC Park.

Lynn didn’t finish an inning tonight, giving up eight runs on six hits.  Cole earned his 12th win of the season in his final home start of the year, giving up five runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings.  This was a long game as most September games are, with the two teams combining to use a total of 14 pitchers.

The Cardinals took the lead in the top of the first on a two run homerun by Tommy Pham.  A two-run single by David Freese tied things up quickly in...

Glasnow Continues To Struggle In Majors

Tyler Glasnow made his return to a big-league mound tonight after a successful stint in Indianapolis for much of the summer.  Reports were that he had better command of his pitches and was doing a better job of controlling the running.  We were all quickly reminded that there is a huge difference between pitching in the majors and the minors, and the Milwaukee Brewers pounced on that difference.  At the end of the night they picked up a series win over the Pittsburgh Pirates with an 8-2 victory tonight.

Glasnow would only last 2.2 innings and allowed five runs on four hits during that time.  He would strikeout three and walk six.  That stat line would balloon his ERA up to 7.89.  A few questionable calls by the home plate umpire didn’t help, and even led to Clint Hurdle being eject...

Pirates Win Third Straight, Beat Cubs 12-0

It has been a very difficult stretch for the Pittsburgh Pirates as of late.  That is certainly what made today’s 12-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs at PNC Park feel that much better.  Chad Kuhl pitched seven shutout innings and the Pirates offense knocked around the Cubs bullpen on their way to a comfortable win in front of their home crowd.

Kuhl improved to 7-10 on the season, giving up four runs and two walks while striking out eight Cubs hitters in seven innings.  Jake Arrieta fell to 14-9, giving up three runs on four hits in 2.1 innings.

The Pirates took the lead in the bottom of the first on a majestic two run homerun by Josh Bell.  Kuhl got himself into trouble, though, in the top of the second, allowing the first pair of hitters on base while struggling with his control...

Pirates Snap Six Game Losing Streak

It has been a rough week for the Pittsburgh Pirates. They entered game three of this four game series with the St. Louis Cardinals on a six-game losing streak and have lost in every way imaginable.  That would change today after a rain delay led to some hot bats and a 6-4 Pittsburgh victory.

The Cardinals struck first when Kolten Wong hit a RBI single to right that scored Jose Martinez.  That would be the lone run that Chad Kuhl would allow today, as he returned from the rain delay to throw five innings and give up three hits, while walking one and striking out six.  The Pirates offense would come to life to ensure Kuhl got the victory.

The Bucco bats would smack three homers on the night.  The first came from Adam Frazier who hit a two-run shot to deep right center.  Elias Diaz would...

Cardinals Hold On To Beat Bucs 11-10

It was a crazy game tonight at PNC Park between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates.  After falling behind by as many as eight runs, the Pirates rallied late, but came up just short as the Cardinals held on for a 11-10 victory on the North Shore.

The Pirates have now lost six straight games, are six games under .500, and continue to drift further and further out of contention in the N.L. Central division.

Trevor Williams suffered the loss tonight (5-6), giving up eight runs on seven hits in three innings of work.  Carlos Martinez improved to 10-9 on the season with the victory, giving up three runs on six hits through seven innings of work.

Homeruns by Tommy Pham in the top of the first and Josh Harrison in the bottom half evened the game 1-1 heading into the second inning...

Pirates Take Down Phillies 6-3

Winning on the road is never easy and the Pittsburgh Pirates have struggled away from PNC Park once again this year.  After dropping game one of this four-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night, it looked like the start of another long road trip.  Things changed after a Pittsburgh win Tuesday night and the Pirates were able to carry that momentum into a three games to one series win, after a 6-3 victory tonight.

Philadelphia jumped on the board first tonight on a crazy play.  With a runner on first, Elias Diaz attempted a snap throw to first to pick the runner off.  Josh Bell wasn’t paying attention because the batters bat flew into the stands, so the ball went all the way to the right field wall and the Phillies took a 1-0 lead...

Young Pirates Lead Team To Victory

The Pittsburgh Pirates were in need of a win tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays after a tough loss last night.  Pittsburgh has struggled in Interleague play this year and while it makes up the minority of the schedule, every game counts.  Contributions from a collection of players who weren’t on the roster before last year, led the way to a 6-2 victory tonight.

Tampa Bay struck first tonight in the first when Evan Longoria doubled home Corey Dickerson.  The Pirates answered quickly with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.  Jose Osuna hit a ground rule double to tie the game at one.  A wild pitch from Rays starter Blake Snell would score David Freese to give the Buccos the lead.  Elias Diaz would finish off the scoring in the first with a two RBI single to right...

Pirates Bullpen Falters Once Again

The Pittsburgh Pirates had a chance tonight to do something they have not done since 1997, sweep a road series against the St. Louis Cardinals.  While they had their chances to pull of this feat tonight, they would come up short with an 8-4 loss.  Pittsburgh was able to hold they lead through five innings tonight, but the shortcomings of the bullpen would ultimately be their downfall.

Chad Kuhl continued his mediocre at best performances tonight.  He would go five innings and allow four runs on eight hits, with six strikeouts and one walk.  The first two runs came in the second on a Greg Garcia single to the outfield.  Randal Grichuk would crush a solo home run to the third level of the left field seats off Kuhl in the sixth.  After letting two batters on, Tony Watson would give up a...

Pirates Earn Series Split, Beat Marlins 3-1

After earning a much needed victory yesterday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Pirates had an opportunity to split this weekend’s four game series at PNC Park with another win today against the Miami Marlins.  Ivan Nova took the mound for Pittsburgh against a familiar face for Pirates’ fans – Jeff Locke.

Nova was solid for Pittsburgh, and the offense did just enough to tally a 3-1 victory on the North Shore.

Improving to 6-4 on the season, Nova gave up just one hit and no walks in six innings, lowering his ERA to 2.83 on the season.  The lone run for Miami was scored on Daniel Hudson.  For the second straight day, Felipe Rivero earned a four-out save.

Overall, Locke pitched well against his former team, giving up three runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings...

Pirates Rally To Defeat Marlins 7-6

While the Pittsburgh Pirates have had trouble pitching for the past few weeks, the offense has showed some signs of life in the month of June.  After dropping the first two games of this series, the bats came to life late to earn a victory over the Miami Marlins today at a sunny PNC Park.  The win was much needed since Pittsburgh had dropped four straight games.

The Pirates jumped on the board in the second inning when Andrew McCutchen hit a RBI double to deep left center field.  Down two runs in the third Josh Bell would single to left center to score Adam Frazier.  The Buccos would find themselves down two again in the fourth, but cut into that lead when Elias Diaz crossed home on a double play.

Pittsburgh would be down two in the seventh and that is when they completed the comeback...
