Pirates Rally Late To Defeat Cubs

I guess it is never too late to play exciting baseball and that is exactly what the Pittsburgh Pirates did tonight.  After a so-so night by starter Steven Brault, the Pittsburgh bullpen and offense battled back to pick up a 4-3 victory.  Anytime the Pirates can send the Chicago Cubs away with a defeat is good news to me.

Brault got the start tonight in place of Ivan Nova and had his work cut out for him.  He would last five innings, giving up three runs on eight hits with two walks.  Though the final stat line isn’t terrible, he was walking the tightrope quite a bit during that time.  Brault had a great year in Indianapolis and will hopefully get a couple more starts at the Major League level this year.

Cubs Beat Pirates 6-1

After taking two of three from the Cincinnati Reds this weekend, the Pittsburgh Pirates continued their N.L. Central road trip against the first place Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.  Tonight, the Bucs missed plenty of scoring opportunities on offense and played sloppy defense on their way to a 6-1 loss to the Cubs.

Trevor Williams started for Pittsburgh tonight, battling his way through five innings against the high powered Chicago offense.  Williams was tagged with the loss tonight, giving up two runs on six hits.  His mound opponent, Mike Montgomery, pitched very well, giving up one run on six hits in seven innings of work.

An RBI single by Ian Happ in the bottom of the second inning scored Anthony Rizzo to get the Cubs on the board...

Nova, Polanco Lead Pirates To Victory

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs brought their division rivalry to the national stage tonight and the Pittsburgh fans came away happy.  Another solid pitching performance from Ivan Nova, plus a two-run home run from Gregory Polanco, sealed the deal on a 4-2 Pirates victory over Chicago.  It is always nice to see the “L” flag fly at Wrigley Field.

Nova has easily been the Pirates best pitcher in 2017 and he showed that once again tonight.  He would pitch 6.2 innings and allow two runs on three hits, to go along with six strikeouts and one walk.  Those two runs allowed came in the fourth inning when Ian Happ and Kyle Schwarber hit back to back solo home runs.  The Schwarber home run gave the Cubs their only lead of the night.

The Buccos struck first in the top half of the fou...
