Pirates Finish Off Sweep Of Cubs

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs met for the final time in 2019 tonight.  The end result was a 9-5 victory and series sweep for Pittsburgh.  The Pirates led for all nine innings and got one final good start from Joe Musgrove.

Musgrove worked six innings tonight and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.  Those three runs came in the sixth inning.  The first two came on an Ian Happ double to right field.  Happ then came in to score on a Jonathan Lucroy groundout to the pitcher.

The Buccos got off to a hot start against Chicago starter Jose Quintana.  In the first inning Pablo Reyes brought home Melky Cabrera and Jose Osuna with a triple to left center field.  Two more runs would score in the third on an Osuna double to right...

Pirates Win, Cubs Eliminated From Playoff Contention

Dario Agrazal and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night at PNC Park, officially eliminating them from playoff contention with a 4-2 win on the north shore.

Agrazal pitched well, self-proclaimed his best start of the season, giving up two runs on six hits in six innings of work.  Francisco Liriano and Michael Feliz each pitched a scoreless inning, setting the table for Keone Kela, who earned his first save of the season.

The Cubs did take the early lead on a RBI single by Ian Happ in the second inning, scoring Willson Contreras.  The Pirates responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Erik Gonzalez’s RBI double tied the game, and a single by Jake Elmore put them in front, 2-1.

Happ homered in the seventh to tie the game, but the Pirates ...

Pirates Rally Late, Beat Cubs 3-2

After taking two of three games over the Los Angeles Angels this week, the Pittsburgh Pirates returned home to PNC Park to face off against the Chicago Cubs.  The Bucs rallied from behind in the ninth inning on Friday night, beating the Cubs 3-2 in a walk off victory.

The Pirates have won three of four games, and have won  5 of the 11 meetings against the Cubs so far this season.

Joe Musgrove and Kyle Hendricks battled on the mound against one another, each giving their team a chance to win this game.  Hendricks lasted 7 innings, giving up one run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout, while Musgrove gave up two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts in 7.1 innings.  While neither pitcher earned a decision, both pitched very well.

Scoring was at a premium in this game, with the fir...

Pirates Lack Offense In Loss To Cubs

The Pittsburgh Pirates entered tonight on a three-game losing streak and welcomed the Chicago Cubs to town for a four-game series.  Pittsburgh had played well against Chicago earlier in the season, but the Cubs have been getting the best of the Pirates as of late and that trend continued tonight when they defeated the Buccos 1-0.

Pitching is what dominated this game.  Pittsburgh sent Ivan Nova to the mound and he would work 6.2 innings.  He would allow one run on seven hits to go with three strikeouts.  That lone run was a solo home run from Ian Happ in the fourth inning.  Richard Rodriguez lasted 1.1 innings and would strikeout all four batters that he faced.  Felipe Vazquez worked the ninth and walked one batter, without allowing a run.

Chicago had Jon Lester start for them and he ...

Cubs Split Series, Beat Pirates 9-2

After an exciting victory last night, the Pittsburgh Pirates took the field tonight at PNC Park looking to earn a two game series sweep against the division-leading Chicago Cubs.  But tonight, the Cubs jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 9-2 victory.

Cole Hamels made his debut with the Cubs tonight, and his offense gave him a four run lead before he even threw his first pitch.  It was not Nick Kingham’s night, lasting just one inning while giving up four runs (two earned) on three hits.

A groundout by Jason Heyward scored the game’s first run, and an error by Sean Rodriguez on a ball off the bat of Javier Baez scored the Cubs’ second run.  An error by Kingham scored the game’s third run, and Kyle Schwarber’s single made it 4-0 after a half inning.

Francisco Cervelli’s...

Cubs Offense Too Much For Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates offense and starting pitching has been a pleasant surprise so far this season, while the bullpen has been shaky at best.  Tonight, against the Chicago Cubs, that offense would come to life early, but the Chicago offense would stay persistent and get the best of Pittsburgh tonight in a 13-5 Chicago victory.

Steven Brault started tonight for the Pirates.  He had looked good in two previous starts, but tonight not so much.  He would allow four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks over the course of five innings.  What made it worse was that he gave up those four runs right after the Buccos plated three runs on a Sean Rodriguez home run.

Pittsburgh was able to tie the game in the fifth inning on a Francisco Cervelli RBI single to right that scored S...

Pirates Rally Late To Defeat Cubs

I guess it is never too late to play exciting baseball and that is exactly what the Pittsburgh Pirates did tonight.  After a so-so night by starter Steven Brault, the Pittsburgh bullpen and offense battled back to pick up a 4-3 victory.  Anytime the Pirates can send the Chicago Cubs away with a defeat is good news to me.

Brault got the start tonight in place of Ivan Nova and had his work cut out for him.  He would last five innings, giving up three runs on eight hits with two walks.  Though the final stat line isn’t terrible, he was walking the tightrope quite a bit during that time.  Brault had a great year in Indianapolis and will hopefully get a couple more starts at the Major League level this year.

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the Buccos would collect two runs on a Jor...

Cubs Beat Pirates 6-1

After taking two of three from the Cincinnati Reds this weekend, the Pittsburgh Pirates continued their N.L. Central road trip against the first place Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.  Tonight, the Bucs missed plenty of scoring opportunities on offense and played sloppy defense on their way to a 6-1 loss to the Cubs.

Trevor Williams started for Pittsburgh tonight, battling his way through five innings against the high powered Chicago offense.  Williams was tagged with the loss tonight, giving up two runs on six hits.  His mound opponent, Mike Montgomery, pitched very well, giving up one run on six hits in seven innings of work.

An RBI single by Ian Happ in the bottom of the second inning scored Anthony Rizzo to get the Cubs on the board...

Nova, Polanco Lead Pirates To Victory

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs brought their division rivalry to the national stage tonight and the Pittsburgh fans came away happy.  Another solid pitching performance from Ivan Nova, plus a two-run home run from Gregory Polanco, sealed the deal on a 4-2 Pirates victory over Chicago.  It is always nice to see the “L” flag fly at Wrigley Field.

Nova has easily been the Pirates best pitcher in 2017 and he showed that once again tonight.  He would pitch 6.2 innings and allow two runs on three hits, to go along with six strikeouts and one walk.  Those two runs allowed came in the fourth inning when Ian Happ and Kyle Schwarber hit back to back solo home runs.  The Schwarber home run gave the Cubs their only lead of the night.

The Buccos struck first in the top half of the fou...
