Wacha, Cardinals Shut Out Pirates 5-0

The Pittsburgh Pirates have some history with Michael Wacha.  Over the years, Wacha has looked almost perfect against the Bucs in some of the biggest games.  This afternoon, it was nearly unhittable, stifling the Pirates hitters and holding a no-hit bid until the ninth inning.  The St. Louis Cardinals jumped in front early and coasted to an easy 5-0 victory at Busch Stadium.

Pittsburgh has now lost five straight series, and in those series, they hold a 5-12 record.  They are now just one game over .500, and after a great start against the N.L. Central, they are now just 14-12 against their division.

Nick Kingham started for Pittsburgh, falling to 2-2 on the season after giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits through five innings.  Steven Brault pitched two scoreless innings, ...

Flaherty Beats Williams, Pirates 4-1

A day after coasting to an 8-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Pirates returned to action this afternoon against their division rivals at PNC Park.  Today, unfortunately, the Cardinals got the best of them, as Jack Flaherty pitched a gem and Trevor Williams struggled.  The Cardinals took an early lead and went on for a 4-1 win.

Flaherty was solid for St. Louis, giving up one run on four hits in six innings of work.  Williams, on the other hand, struggled, giving up four runs on seven hits in just four innings of work.  The Bucs used a total of five pitchers, although the bullpen did keep the Cards off the bullpen.  Unfortunately, the damage had already been done.

Matt Carpenter led off the game with a solo homerun to right field.  Starling Marte responded with a ...

Pirates Mount Comeback, Win In Extras

The Pittsburgh Pirates were home at PNC Park to begin a three-game series with their division rival, the St. Louis Cardinals.                       Even this early in the season division games carry extra weight, especially if things get tight down the stretch.  Things didn’t look good early for Pittsburgh, but the battled back late to tie the game and finished off St. Louis with a 6-5 victory in 11 innings.

Steven Brault looked good through the first two innings but would be hit hard in the third.  The Cardinals tagged Brault for three runs that inning and would give up one run in each of the next two innings.  He would be lifted after 4.2 innings and allow five runs, four earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

The Pirates offense would final...

Cardinals Beat Pirates 4-1

After a disappointing finale to their home stand against the Chicago Cubs, the Pittsburgh Pirates hit the road to continue their month long battle against N.L. Central division foes.  The St. Louis Cardinals still have an outside change at making the postseason, and they played like a team hungry for the playoffs, beating the Pirates 4-1 at Bush Stadium.

Trevor Williams started for Pittsburgh tonight and never really settled in.  He struggled with his control, and in addition to walks, he was hit hard on balls he left over the plate.  He gave up four runs on four hits and four walks in 4.2 innings.  His mound opponent, Luke Weaver, pitched a great game, giving up seven hits and struck out seven batters in 5.2 innings.

The Cardinals took the lead in the bottom of the third on a RBI grou...

Pirates Snap Six Game Losing Streak

It has been a rough week for the Pittsburgh Pirates. They entered game three of this four game series with the St. Louis Cardinals on a six-game losing streak and have lost in every way imaginable.  That would change today after a rain delay led to some hot bats and a 6-4 Pittsburgh victory.

The Cardinals struck first when Kolten Wong hit a RBI single to right that scored Jose Martinez.  That would be the lone run that Chad Kuhl would allow today, as he returned from the rain delay to throw five innings and give up three hits, while walking one and striking out six.  The Pirates offense would come to life to ensure Kuhl got the victory.

The Bucco bats would smack three homers on the night.  The first came from Adam Frazier who hit a two-run shot to deep right center.  Elias Diaz would...

Cardinals Hold On To Beat Bucs 11-10

It was a crazy game tonight at PNC Park between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates.  After falling behind by as many as eight runs, the Pirates rallied late, but came up just short as the Cardinals held on for a 11-10 victory on the North Shore.

The Pirates have now lost six straight games, are six games under .500, and continue to drift further and further out of contention in the N.L. Central division.

Trevor Williams suffered the loss tonight (5-6), giving up eight runs on seven hits in three innings of work.  Carlos Martinez improved to 10-9 on the season with the victory, giving up three runs on six hits through seven innings of work.

Homeruns by Tommy Pham in the top of the first and Josh Harrison in the bottom half evened the game 1-1 heading into the second inning...

Ninth Inning Homer Lifts Pirates To Victory

The Pittsburgh Pirates continued their week-long division road trip tonight with the first of three games against the St. Louis Cardinals.  After a split in Milwaukee, Pittsburgh was looking to regain some traction in order to remain relevant in the battle for the N.L. Central crown.  It took all nine innings to decide a victor tonight, but after the final out was recorded it was the Pirates who came away with the win.

Josh Bell got things started tonight in the second inning when he lifted a solo home run to right field.  The Cardinals quickly answered to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Jose Martinez hit a two-run homer to left.  Andrew McCutchen was able to bring home David Freese with a ground out to second in the fourth inning to tie the game.

Paul DeJong gave S...

Bucs Bats Stay Silent, Lose 2-1

In last night’s loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Pirates offense was virtually non-existent.  Tonight, unfortunately, the same trend continued, as despite another strong performance from their starter, they weren’t able to put together enough of an offensive effort to come away with a victory.

Prior to today’s game, the Bucs and their fans received some terrible news, as Starling Marte was suspended for 80 games after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs.  Jose Osuna was recalled from Indianapolis and did make an appearance in the game tonight.

For the second straight night at Busch Stadium, it was a solid pitching matchup between the two starters.  Chad Kuhl lasted six innings, giving up two runs on three hits, while Mike Leake gave up one run on seven ...

Cardinals Win Pitcher’s Duel vs. Pirates

After sweeping the Chicago Cubs this past weekend, the Pittsburgh Pirates were riding high going into their final stop of this seven-game road trip.  Their opponent, the St. Louis Cardinals, had gotten off to a slow start this year and found themselves at the bottom of the N.L. Central division.  Pittsburgh would look to continue their recent success, while St. Louis was looking to turn things around.

The Pirates offense was never able to find any rhythm tonight against Cardinals starter Lance Lynn. Lynn threw seven shutout innings, giving up three hits, while striking out five and walking one.  Trevor Rosenthal was just as good in the eighth, striking out one batter and retiring the side in order.  That would set up Seung-hwan Oh to collect the save in the ninth.

While Oh would pick u...
