Cubs Complete Sweep, Beat Bucs 8-3

This was certainly not the start to the second half of the season we were envisioning as Pittsburgh Pirates fans.  Finishing up strong before the All Star break had some optimism floating around the Steel City; Unfortunately, though, the Pirates lost their third straight game to the Chicago Cubs this weekend with an 8-3 loss at Wrigley Field this afternoon.

Trevor Williams struggled today, and the Cubs offense stayed hot as they have been all weekend.  The Pirates’ right hander gave up 8 runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings of work, ballooning his ERA to 5.17 on the season.

Chicago took the early lead with a RBI double by Robel Garcia, making it 1-0 in the second inning.  The Pirates responded, though, with three runs in the top of the third.  A single by Bryan Reynolds, a sacrifice fly by Starling Marte, and a double by Jung Ho Kang scored a run each to give the Bucs a 3-1 lead.

After scoring a run in the fourth on a RBI single by Jose Quintana, the Cubs took the lead, and control of the game, with three runs in fifth and sixth innings.  Homeruns by Jason Heyward, Albert Almora, and Kyle Schwarber highlighted the scoring for Chicago, who built the lead to 8-3 after six innings, and were able to coast the rest of the way to the victory.

This was a very disappointing way for the Pirates to begin the second half of this season.  By getting swept this weekend, they essentially lost three games in the standings to the division rival Cubs.  Yes, it is only July, but the Pirates need to prevent sweeps, especially against division opponents, if they want to remain relevant in the postseason picture.

The Pirates will look to get back on track tomorrow evening when they open up a series with another rival, the St. Louis Cardinals, at Busch Stadium.

Record vs. Cubs: 4-6

Record vs. N.L. Central: 18-21

Record on the Road: 22-28

Overall Record: 44-48

And…

As Always…

Let’s Go Bucs!
