The Pittsburgh Pirates couldn’t solve Zac Gallen and the Arizona Diamondbacks’ pitching staff on Monday night, falling by a 3-0 score in the opening game of the teams’ three-game series.
Gallen was stellar for Arizona, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out eight in seven shutout innings. He improved to 7-2 while lowering his ERA to 3.12 for the season.
Tyler Beede started for Pittsburgh, giving up two hits and a walk in 3.2 innings. Manny Banuelos took the loss after giving up a run in two innings of work, while Yohan Ramirez gave up the other two runs in the eighth inning.
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning, when the Diamondbacks loaded up the bases with no outs. Despite a groundout double play hit by Alek Thomas, Geraldo Perdomo crossed the plate in what turned out to be the winning run, and the only run they would need. Ketel Marte’s two run single in the eighth provided a pair of insurance runs.
This was a frustrating way to kick off this series for Pittsburgh. They managed just three hits total as a team, while falling to 44-65 on the season. They will look to right the ship and get back on the winning track on Tuesday evening. Zach Thompson will take the mound for the Bucs against Tommy Henry for Arizona.
