Hayes, Reynolds Hit HRs, Keller Wins 7th Game Of Season

Ke’Bryan Hayes and Bryan Reynolds each hit two-run homeruns, and Mitch Keller won his fifth straight start as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Toronto Blue Jays by an 8-1 score on Saturday afternoon.

A day after a disappointing extra-innings loss in which the Pirates wasted a phenomenal start by Bailey Falter, the offense put this game out of reach with three early runs and added sporadic runs throughout the game to coast to an easy victory.

Keller improved to 7-3 on the season, giving up one run on five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in six innings.  Luis L. Ortiz earned his first save of the season by pitching three scoreless innings in relief.

Edward Olivares got the scoring started in the first inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Andrew McCutchen to make it 1-0.  Hayes two-run homerun later in the inning scored Connor Joe to make it 3-0 after the first inning.

A RBI single by McCutchen in the fifth scored Jared Triolo, and Joe followed later with another RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0.

Down by six runs in the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Jays scored their lone run of the game on a single by Daniel Vogelbach that scored Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Reynolds’ two-run homerun came in the ninth inning, completing the scoring for Pittsburgh.

Keller delivered yet another great start on the mound for Pittsburgh.  It seems as though the Bucs’ right-hander has turned the corner and is putting together quality start after quality start.  The Pirates’ starting pitching has been excellent, which will always keep them in each and every game.

The Pirates and Blue Jays will meet back up for the rubber match of this series on Sunday afternoon.  Quinn Priester will be on the mound for Pittsburgh against Chris Bassitt for Toronto.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:37pm.
