Jones Delivers, Pirates Take Series From Marlins

It was another great day at the ballpark for the Pittsburgh Pirates as they got timely hitting and a great pitching performance from Jared Jones, who was making his MLB debut.  Jones would strike out ten batters, while the offense would collect fifteen hits on their way to a 9-3 victory and series win over the Miami Marlins.

Pittsburgh grabbed the lead in the third on an RBI single by Edward Olivares.  That lead grew to three in the fourth.  Connor Joe drove in a run with a double to left and then came around to score when Ke’Bryan Hayes singled to left center.  Miami would rally with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.  Jake Burger collected an RBI with a double to right, then was driven in on a Jesus Sanchez single.

The Pirates collected two more runs in the fifth when Jared Triolo and Oneil Cruz scored on a fielder’s choice from Michael A. Taylor.  The Marlins got their final run of the night in the sixth when Sanchez hit an RBI single to right center.  Pittsburgh would then put the game away with three runs in the seventh.  Jack Suwinski, Joe, and Bryan Reynolds drove in runs with hits in the inning.

Jones was lights out in his debut and gave Pirates fans a glimpse at what could be a bright future.  He would last 5.2 innings allowing three runs on three hits with two walks and 10 K’s.  Ryan Borucki and Hunter Stratton would each work 2/3 of an inning allowing one hit and striking out a batter.  Jose Hernandez worked a scoreless eighth, before David Bednar saw hits first work of the year by striking out a batter in the ninth.

Marlins starter Ryan Weathers would pitch four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks.  Sixto Sanchez worked the next two innings and give up two runs, one earned, on two hits.  Andrew Nardi allowed four runs on four hits with a walk in the seventh.  The eighth belonged to Declan Cronin who allowed two hits with one walk and one strikeout.  Anthony Bender struck out three and gave up one hit in the ninth.

Series wins are always big, but taking at least three of four to start the season is just what these team needs to get the ball rolling in 2024.  These two teams will wrap up their series on Sunday afternoon at 1:40pm.  The Pirates will send Bailey Falter to the bump, while Miami will counter with Trevor Rogers.
