Keller, Pirates Fall to Tigers 5-1

On Wednesday evening at PNC Park, the Pittsburgh Pirates once again came up short in their quest to complete a series sweep during the 2021 season.  After winning the first two games of their series this week, Mitch Keller and the Bucs fell to the Detroit Tigers by a 5-1 score.

Keller was coming off one of his best starts of the season, but on Wednesday, he regressed and fell back into the funk reminiscent of the rest of his nightmare 2021 campaign.  He fell to 4-11 on the season, giving up four runs on ten hits.

Detroit tagged Keller for a run in the first inning when Miguel Cabrera doubled home Robbie Grossman to make it a 1-0 score.  It would be the beginning of a very productive day at the plate for Cabrera.

Pittsburgh tied the game in the second inning on a RBI single by Kevin Newman, scoring Ben Gamel.

A single by Cabrera in the third scored Akil Baddoo to make it 2-1, and he singled home another run in fifth to make it 5-1.  Later in that inning, Jeimer Candelario singled home Grossman, making it 4-1.  A solo homerun by Grossman, his 22nd of the year, came off Cody Ponce in the seventh inning.

Unfortunately the Pirates were unable to complete the series sweep, something that has eluded them all season.  They will have day off on Thursday before welcoming the Washington Nationals to town on Friday.

Record vs. Tigers: 4-2
