It was a beautiful autumn night at PNC Park, as the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs did battle in game three of a four game series. These two teams have been fairly even against one another this year, and after Chicago won the first two games of this series, Pittsburgh got some revenge tonight. They would pick up a 6-0 win and snap an eight-game losing streak in the process.
Johan Oviedo was solid in seven innings of work tonight. He would allow just three hits and strikeout seven Cubs batters. This would be his fourth win of the year. Zach Thompson came on in relief to begin the eighth inning and would also pitch the ninth. He allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out four batters.
Diego Castillo started the scoring in the first inning when he hit a sac fly to right to bring home Bryan Reynolds. Ji Hwan Bae drove in two runs when he doubled to right in the fifth inning. Bae, along with Rodolfo Castro, would score later in the inning on a three-run home run by Jack Suwinski.
Wade Miley made the start for Chicago, pitching just four innings. He would allow three runs on three hits, though only one was earned due to two errors behind him. Miley struck out three and walked one batter. Adbert Alzolay pitched the next three innings, without much success. Alzolay gave up three runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Rowan Wick came out of the bullpen for the eighth, allowing one hit to go with two strikeouts and a walk.
While this is a lost season, it is good for these young Bucs to have a good night and break the losing streak. Now they will try to even this series, and win the season series, tomorrow afternoon when these two teams play one last time in 2022. The Pirates will send Luis Ortiz to the mound for the start, while the Cubs will counter with Adrian Sampson. Game time is 1:35pm.
