Lynn, Cardinals Blank Bucs 4-0

After a dramatic walk-off victory last night at PNC Park, the Pittsburgh Pirates were looking to clinch their weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals with another win tonight.  Lance Lynn took the mound for St. Louis against Jameson Taillon for Pittsburgh, pitting an enticing pitching matchup on a Saturday night.

Both teams had their chances tonight, but Lynn was able to shut the door on the Bucs time and time again, as the Cardinals beat Taillon 4-0.

Lynn was solid for St. Louis, giving up eight hits but no walks in 6.1 innings of work.  Taillon fell to 5-3 on the season, giving up four runs on eight hits in five innings.  The Pirates had plenty of chances to score, the best of which coming in the seventh with the bases loaded.  But unfortunately, they weren’t able to get that one big hit when it mattered.

The Cardinals took the lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Jedd Gyorko.  A double by Lynn scored Luke Voit in the fifth to make it 2-0.  Matt Carpenter’s RBI single and Tommy Pham’s RBI double later in the inning provided some insurance, but Lynn and the Cards’ bullpen didn’t need any help tonight.

The Pirates left a total of 17 runners on base.  Josh Harrison left five on base himself, including three in the seventh when he popped out with the bases loaded to end the threat.

There really isn’t much to say about tonight’s game.  The Pirates didn’t show up to play.  They were sloppy on defense and Taillon was inefficient on the mound.  You have to be able to score runs in this league to win, and you need to cash in on scoring opportunities.  They weren’t able to do that tonight, and they lost the game because of it.

The Cardinals and Pirates will meet up tomorrow afternoon in the rubber match of the series at PNC Park.  Carlos Martinez will take the mound for St. Louis against Trevor Williams for Pittsburgh.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:35pm.
