The Pittsburgh Pirates responded to a 19-2 blowout loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night with a 7-4 victory on Saturday afternoon at PNC Park.
Bryse Wilson started for Pittsburgh, earning his first victory of the season. He lasted six innings, giving up two runs on eighth hits. His mound opponent, Aaron Ashby, took the loss for the Brewers, giving up four runs on five hits in 3.2 innings.
The Brewers scored the game’s first run on a single by Kolten Wong, scoring Christian Yelich. Pittsburgh scored three runs in the third inning to take control of the game. A groundout by Bryan Reynolds scored Tyler Heineman for the Bucs’ first run, and a two run homerun by Michael Chavis, his 9th of the season, made it 3-1.
Oneil Cruz hit his third homerun of the season in the fourth inning to make it 4-1, but a solo shot by Yelich made it 4-2. Pittsburgh seemingly put the game away with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. A two-run single by Daniel Vogelbach scored Ke’Bryan Hayes and Reynolds to make it 6-2, and a double by Diego Castillo made it 7-2.
Milwaukee attempted to get back into the game with a pair of runs on the eighth. A solo shot by Wong and a double by Jace Peterson cut the lead to 7-4, but that would be as close as they would get on this day.
This was a nice response by the Pirates this afternoon. After being blown out of PNC Park on Friday night, the Bucs took the field today and took care of business. They now have a good opportunity to take the series from the Brewers with another victory on Sunday. Jose Quintana will take the mound for Pittsburgh against Brandon Woodruff for Milwaukee.
