Pirates Beat Marlins 7-2

The Pittsburgh Pirates opened their 2024 regular season with a come-from-behind victory over the Miami Marlins on Thursday.  In the teams’ second matchup on Friday, the Bucs were in control from start to finish, coasting to a 7-2 win.

Martin Perez made his debut for the Bucs on Friday, giving up one run on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in his 4.1 innings on the mound.  Ryder Ryan earned the victory, giving up just one hit in his 1.2 innings, while Josh Fleming pitched the final three innings, earning the save while giving up one run on two hits.

It was a collective effort at the plate for Pittsburgh on Friday, as the team’s ten hits came from seven different players.  Ke’Bryan Hayes had two hits and two RBIs, while Oneil Cruz and Connor Joe each had a pair of hits and an RBI.

Pittsburgh got on the board in the second inning with a pair of runs to take early control of the game.  Jared Triolo drew a bases-loaded walk to score Edward Olivares for the game’s first run, and a sacrifice fly by Michael A. Taylor scored Henry Davis from this to make it 2-0.

An RBI double by Hayes in the third scored Bryan Reynolds to make it 3-0, followed later in the frame by a sacrifice fly by Olivares that scored Hayes.

Miami got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Jake Burger singled home Luis Arraez to cut the Bucs’ lead to 4-1.  But that was as close as the Marlins would get on this night.

A double by Joe in the sixth scored Taylor and a single by Cruz in the seventh scored Hayes made it 6-1 to break the game open a bit.  Hayes’ sacrifice fly scored Joe in the eighth to score the Pirates’ final run of the game.  Miami scored a run in the bottom of the ninth on a groundout, but it was far too little, far too late for the fish.

This was one of those feel-good, comfortable victories for the Pirates.  They had control of the game from the very beginning, built a sizable lead and never let off the gas until the final out in the ninth inning.  This team has put a couple wins together, and are now in prime position to win this four-game series to open the season.

The Bucs will hand the ball to Jared Jones on Saturday afternoon, whose mound opponent will be Ryan Weathers for Miami.  First pitch is scheduled for 4:10pm.
