It was another day at the ballpark for the Pittsburgh Pirates and unfortunately it would result in another loss. For the fifth straight day Pittsburgh came off the field in defeat, today by the final of 5-0 to the Milwaukee Brewers. The pitching for the Pirates continued to struggle, but when the offense produces nothing, it shows how much today was a team loss.
Joey Wiemer started the scoring for Milwaukee in the third inning when he hit a two-run home run to right field. The Brewers collected two more runs in the fifth when Rowdy Tellez hit a ball to right center that was misplayed by Connor Joe allowing the runners from first and second to score. The final run of the afternoon came in the eighth when Blake Perkins hit a solo home run to left center.
Mitch Keller took the ball for Pittsburgh today and while he was not bad, it was not the lights out performance we hope for when he starts. He would allow four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. The surprise of the day was Roansy Contreras pitching two scoreless innings out of the pen with one strikeout. The eighth belonged to Jose Hernandez who allowed one run on one hit with three strikeouts.
The Brewers started the game with Wade Miley. He would pitch five innings, striking out four, walking two, and allowing two hits. Milwaukee then used four pitchers out of the bullpen to cover the final four innings. They would combine to allow four hits, walk one batter, and strikeout three. The biggest stat was keeping the Pirates off the scoreboard.
Carlos Santana was the only member of the Pittsburgh offense to record multiple hits. He would have two of their six. The Pirates will now look to avoid being swept for the second straight series, and going winless on the road trip, tomorrow at 2:10pm. The Pirates will send Luis Ortiz to the hill, while the Brewers will counter with Freddy Peralta.
