Pirates Eclipse Tigers 7-4

The Pittsburgh Pirates continued their five-game home stand Monday night with the first of two games against the Detroit Tigers.  Both Pittsburgh and Detroit have been surprises to start the 2024 season, and the Pirates would put a strong offensive game together tonight with a three-run victory to open the series.

The Tigers jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Colt Keith hit an RBI single to left center to plate Parker Meadows.  The Pirates would answer with three runs in the second.  Connor Joe tied the game with a single to center and would then come around to score when Joey Bart singled home a pair of runs.

Jared Triolo increased that lead to four runs with he hit a two RBI single to center in the third.  A Zach McKinstry sac fly in the fifth would get Detroit back within three.  Joe would strike again in the firth with an RBI single to left center and Bryan Reynolds would collect his 100th career home run with a solo shot to left center in the sixth.  The Tigers would add a run in the eighth and ninth, but still fall three runs short.

Mitch Keller had his best start of the season tonight going six innings, allowing two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and three walks.  Josh Fleming covered the next 1.1 innings giving up one run on two hits with a walk.  Aroldis Chapman was dominant in striking out the only two batters he faced, hitting 101 mph on the radar gun.  Ryder Ryan worked the ninth and would allow one run on two hits with a strikeout.

Detroit starter Reese Olson gave up six runs on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts over 4.1 innings.  He was replaced by Tyler Holton who worked an inning, allowing one run on two hits with a walk.  Will Vest collected the final two outs of the sixth, before Joey Wirtz pitched the seventh and eighth.  He would strikeout two batters and give up one hit.

With the win Pittsburgh would improve to 9-2 on the season for the first time since 1992.  It was great to see Keller perform at a high-level tonight, if he can build on this then he could be the top of the rotation guy this team will need.  This series will wrap up tomorrow afternoon at 12:35pm.  The starters are set to be Martin Perez for the Pirates and Casey Mize for the Tigers.
