Pirates Open Home Stand With Victory Over Brewers

The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers for the first time this season, an 8-7 victory at PNC Park on Thursday.

The offense was led by Michael Perez, who had three homeruns on the night.  The Pirates became the first team in Major League Baseball history to have three different players with a three-HR game in the same month (Bryan Reynolds & Jack Suwinski). As a team, the Bucs hit five homeruns on Thursday, which turned out to be JUST enough to beat the Brewers for the first time in 2022.

Pittsburgh took the early lead, hitting two long balls in the second inning.  A two run homerun by Oneil Cruz was followed by a solo shot by Suwinski to make it 3-0.

Milwaukee crawled within a run, scoring two runs in the third inning.  A triple by Christian Yelich got the Brewers on the board, and a RBI groundout by Willy Adames made it a one-run game.

A RBI double by Omar Narvaez in the fourth tied the game, but the Pirates would re-gain the lead quickly.  Perez’s first homerun of the game, a two run shot to right, made it 5-3 after four innings.

After the Brewers scored a run in the top of the sixth inning, Perez hit his second homerun of the game, another two run homer to right, making it a 7-4 score.  His final long ball of the game came in the eighth, which turned out to be the game-winner.

The Brewers nearly came back and tied the game in the ninth.  A RBI double by Adames made it 8-5, followed by a groundout by Rowdy Tellez and a single by Kolten Wong made it 8-7.  Fortunately for Pittsburgh, that was as close as Milwaukee would get…as the Bucs held on for the one-run victory.

This was definitely a feel-good win for this team…finally beating the Brewers.  They now have a strong chance for a successful weekend against an N.L. Central opponent.  Corbin Burnes will take the mound for the Brewers against Roansy Contreras for Pittsburgh.

Record vs. Brewers: 1-6

Record vs. N.L. Central: 14-23

Record at Home: 18-20

Overall Record: 31-45

And…

As Always…

Let’s Go Bucs!
