Pirates Open Homestand With Victory Over Diamondbacks

The Pittsburgh Pirates scored seven runs in the fourth inning on their way to a 13-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at PNC Park on Friday night.

After concluding their road trip with a win over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday afternoon, the Bucs got off to a strong start on this homestand with a solid victory on the North Shore.

During the course of this frustrating stretch of baseball the Bucs have endured over the past couple of weeks, the inability to score runs was the main culprit.  In the past two games, they have scored a total of 21 runs.

On Friday, the Pirates totaled 17 hits, including three by Andrew McCutchen, Ji Hwan Bae, Ke’Bryan Hayes, and Josh Palacios each.  Bryan Reynolds led the club with four RBIs, including a three-run homerun which helped break the game wide open.

Certainly not to be overlooked was Johan Oviedo, who improved to 3-3 on the season after giving up one run on two hits in six innings of work.

Hayes’ double in the second inning got the scoring started for Pittsburgh, putting them in front at 1-0.  With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Bucs’ bats came alive to break the game.  Palacios singled to left field, scoring a pair of runs, and later, Reynolds drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a 4-1 game.  A two-run double by Jack Suwinski and a single by Hayes increased the lead to 8-1.

Reynolds’ three run homerun in the fifth inning made it 11-1, and after the Diamondbacks scored a pair of runs in the seventh, the Pirates added two more runs in the eighth on singles by Bae and Pacios.

There’s no denying that May has been a miserable month for the Pirates and their fan base.  But if they put together some victories here in the last week and a half, they can still end up with a somewhat respectable mark.  In any event, with the victory on Friday, they have put themselves in a strong position to win this weekend series.

The Diamondbacks and Bucs will take the field on Saturday at a special 4:05pm start.  Mitch Keller will look to continue his stellar season thus far for Pittsburgh against Brandon Pfaadt for Arizona.
