Pirates Open Series With Win Over Rockies

The Pittsburgh Pirates began their final series against the N.L. West tonight, with a four games against the Colorado Rockies. Pittsburgh has played great baseball against the west division and will need to continue this trend if they hope to keep pace with the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs.

The Pirates offense struck early and often throughout the night. They scored their first two runs of the night in the first on solo home runs by Starling Marte and Aramis Ramirez. Jordy Mercer would then drive in the third run of the night in the second with a double to left. Mercer would duplicate that feat in the fourth, along with a Gregory Polanco RBI single to right center.

A.J. Burnett made the start for the Buccos tonight and at times he was on target, but he did have control issues that led to four walks and six hits. Burnett would make one mistake pitch over the course of his 5.2 innings of work, which would come against Tom Murphy in the fifth, when he hit a three run home run. It should have been only a two run shot, but Pedro Alvarez had trouble on the final part of a double play earlier in the inning.

Pittsburgh would tack more runs on in the sixth, when Marte doubled in a run. He would end the night going 4-5, with two RBI. The Pirates then closed the game out for good with a three run ninth. The first run came on a Ramirez single to center, that was followed up with Andrew McCutchen scoring on a ground out to first.   Keon Broxton, who was recently called up from AAA, plated the final run of the night when he stole third and scored on a Murphy throwing error to make it a 9-3 final.

With both Chicago and St. Louis winning tonight, the Buccos remain two games up on the Cubs in the wild card and trail the Cardinals by four games in the division. Pittsburgh has no time to rest as game two of this series with the Colorado will take place tomorrow night at 8:40pm.
