The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to be the biggest story of the 2012 Major League Baseball season. With their victory yesterday afternoon at Wrigley Field over the Chicago Cubs, the Bucs are now 60-44 on the season.
They are in second place in the N.L. Central behind the Cincinnati Reds, who are the hottest team in baseball. The Reds lead the Pirates by 3.5 games in the division, making this weekend’s series between the two teams at Great American Ballpark one of the most enticing of the season thus far.
Andrew McCutchen was named the N.L. Player of the Month for both June and July, and is assumed to be the favorite for the MVP award at this point. A.J. Burnett has a 13-3 record following his near no-hitter against the Cubs on Tuesday night, while guys like Garrett Jones, Pedro Alvarez, Neil Walker, and yes, Starling Marte, are making valuable contributions on a nightly basis.
On this special Bucco Beat podcast, the FFTS guys discuss the Pirates last ten games against the Cubs and the Houston Astros, dissect and analyze the N.L. Central standings, and look ahead to the series against the Reds this weekend.
There’s another episode of Ask Zane Anything, as well as a look at the Pirates activity leading up to the MLB trade deadline.
This weekend promises to be a huge test for the Pirates against not only the best team in baseball right now, but they’re the best team playing the very best at this point in the season. Be sure to stay tuned to Fans From The Stands for all the recaps and reactions to each game this weekend, as well as for the rest of the season.
