Pirates Take Series, Beat Diamondbacks 3-0

The Pittsburgh Pirates followed up their three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this week with another series victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks this weekend at PNC Park.  After dropping the first game of the series on Friday, the Bucs responded with back to back wins, including a 3-0 victory this afternoon on the north shore.

Zach Thompson started for Pittsburgh, earning the victory (3-4) while giving up four hits and two walks in five innings.  David Bednar tallied his 10th save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.  Zac Gallen (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season for Arizona, giving up two runs on five hits in six innings.

The Pirates broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth when Cal MItchell hit a solo homerun to right field to make it 1-0.  A sacrifice fly by Diego Castillo in the sixth scored Jack Suwinski to make it 2-0, and an RBI single by Ke’Bryan Hayes scored Tyler Heineman to make it 3-0.  That more than enough for the Bucs’ bullpen, who held the Diamondbacks’ lineup in check throughout the afternoon

The Pirates are playing solid baseball right now.  They have now won five of their last six games and six of their last eight.  After a day off on Monday, they will continue their home stand on Tuesday night, when they kick off a quick two game series against the Detroit Tigers at PNC Park.

Record vs. Diamondbacks: 2-1

Record vs. N.L. West: 11-7

Record at Home: 13-15

Overall Record: 24-28

And…

As Always…

Let’s Go Bucs!
