Pirates Take Series From Cardinals

The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals met at PNC Park for game two of their three game series on Tuesday night.  Pittsburgh won game one and would use a five run fifth inning to take game two by the final of 6-3.

Connor Joe started the scoring for the Pirates in the fourth inning when he singled to left center to score Ji Hwan Bae.  St. Louis would tie the game in the top of the fifth on a Richie Palacios solo home run to right center.  A Bae groundout to score Vinny Capra got things going for Pittsburgh in the fifth.  Bryan Reynolds then drove in a pair with a double to right.  He then scored when Andrew McCutchen hit a 424 ft. homer to right.

The Cardinals cut the lead to four in the sixth when Wilson Contreras doubled to center, scoring Paul Goldschmidt.  The final run of the night came in the top of the seventh when Alec Burlson singled to left center scoring Jordan Walker.

Johan Oviedo earned his seventh win of the year after working five innings.  He would allow one run on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk.  Dauri Moreta covered the next 1.2 innings, giving up two runs on three hits with a walk.  Colin Holderman was next out of the pen, pitching 1.1 innings.  He would strikeout two and walk one.  David Bednar picked up his 27th save after allowing one hit and striking out a batter in the ninth.

The struggles of Adam Wainwright in 2023 continued as he allowed six runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk over 4.2 innings.  John King, Jacob Barnes, and Andrew Pallante came out of the St. Louis bullpen to cover the final 3.1 innings.  The would combine to give up one hit, while striking out and walking one batter.

Even with these two teams out of the chase for the postseason, it is nice to get a win over the Cardinals.  This three-game series will conclude on Wednesday afternoon at 12:35pm.  Luis Ortiz is slated to start for the Pirates, while St. Louis will go with Zack Thompson.
