Pirates Win Second Straight, Beat Diamondbacks 4-2

The Pittsburgh Pirates won their second consecutive game on Tuesday night, beating the Arizona Diamondbacks by a 4-2 score at PNC Park.

JT Brubaker started for Pittsburgh, picking up the victory (5-13) while giving up four hits and three walks while striking out six in his five innings on the mound.  Losing pitcher was Buccos’ nemesis Madison Bumgarner (7-8), who was tagged for four runs on six hits and three walks in his six innings.  Chris Stratton earned his second save of the season by pitching a hitless ninth inning.

The Pirates took the lead in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs off Bumgarner.  Michael Chavis connected on a solo homerun to left center field, his third of the season, to get the scoring started.  Bryan Reynolds’ sacrifice fly later in the inning scored Ke’Bryan Hayes to make it a 2-0 advantage.

A two run homerun by Anthony Alford in the bottom of the fourth scored Ben Gamel to give the Bucs a commanding 4-0 lead.

Arizona attempted to make things interesting in the eighth inning, cutting the lead in half on a two run homerun by Ketel Marte.  But they would get no closer, as the Pirates shut things down in the eighth and ninth innings to secure the victory.

Yes, the Diamondbacks are a bad baseball team.  And yes, the Pirates are playing at home.  But still, this is a solid performance by this Buccos team so far.  They are now once again in position to sweep a series for the first time this season, similar to the opportunity they had against the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend.  Hopefully the Pirates can push this across the finish line and secure the sweep.

The Diamondbacks and Pirates will conclude their three game series on Wednesday night at PNC Park.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
