Pirates Win Wild Game At PNC Park

After being shut out in back to back games and falling to the .500 mark, the Pittsburgh Pirates were in desperate need of a victory.  Tonight, the offense came alive as they won a crazy game over the Los Angeles Dodgers at PNC Park by an 11-9 score.

This was not a good game for the pitching staff on either club.  The two teams used 14 pitchers combined.  Trevor Williams lasted just three innings, giving up four runs on four hits.  Steven Brault earned the victory (5-1) in relief, while Felipe Vazquez tallied his 11th save of the season.

The Pirates took the lead in the bottom of the second on a bases loaded, three run double by Josh Harrison.  Starling Marte singled Harrison home later in the inning, and the Pirates led 4-0.

Los Angeles responded in the top of the third with four runs of their own.  Matt Kemp’s two run double cut the Pirates’ lead in half, and a two run homerun by Cody Bellinger tied the game.

Pittsburgh scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning.  A ground ball hit by Colin Moran was fielded by Max Muncy, who tried to throw to second for the force out.  Instead, the ball hit off David Freese’s helmet and went into left field.  Corey Dickerson scored to give the Bucs the lead once again.  A ground out by Josh Bell scored another run, pushing the lead to 6-4.

A two run double by Freese in the fourth made it 8-4 Bucs, but Kemp’s three run homerun in the fifth cut the lead to 8-7.  The Pirates responded once again on a RBI single by Sean Rodriguez and a two run double by Gregory Polanco, making it 11-7 after six innings.

The Dodgers battled back in the eighth inning with a pair of runs to cut the lead in half.  Kemp scored on a balk, and Yasmani Grandal singled home Bellinger to make it 11-9.

The Bucs had to earn this victory the hard way tonight, and it came down to the very last out.  L.A. got two runners on with just one out, with their two most dangerous hitters in this series, Kemp and Bellinger, coming to the plate.  But Vazquez got Kemp to line out and Bellinger to ground out to end the game.

Wow, what a crazy game it was tonight at PNC Park.  This was a very important game for Pittsburgh, who has lost five straight series and was in danger of making it six.  They now have the opportunity to win tomorrow afternoon and take this series before hitting the road for a very difficult road trip.  Dennis Santana will take the mound for the Dodgers against Jameson Taillon for the Bucs.

Record vs. Dodgers: 1-1

Record vs. N.L. West: 5-7

Record at Home: 18-14

Overall Record: 31-30

As Always…

Let’s Go Bucs!
