Tellez, Strong Pitching Lead Pirates To 4-0 Victory

A day after a stellar start from Mitch Keller, the Pittsburgh Pirates continued their trend of strong pitching as they beat the Minnesota Twins by a 4-0 score at PNC Park on Saturday afternoon.

This was a “bullpen start” type of game, as the Bucs used a collection of relief pitchers to put together a scoreless afternoon on the mound.  Carmen Mlodzinski started the game, Luis L. Ortiz tossed 4.1 innings of three-hit baseball, while Hunter Stratton earned the victory while only recording one out on the day.

Simeon Woods Richardson was tagged with the loss for the Twins, despite turning in a solid day on the mound.  He gave up one run on six hits in 6.1 innings falling to 2-1 on the season.

This was a pitchers’ duel until the seventh inning, when Rowdy Tellez broke a scoreless tie with a solo homerun, his second of the season, to center field to make it 1-0.  An inning later, Tellez delivered again, this time with a two-run single to left field, making it 3-0.  A single by Michael A. Taylor later in the inning scored another run to make it 4-0, which would be the final score.

This was yet another impressive victory by a Pirates’ team, led by timely hitting a solid pitching.  The superb pitching takes some pressure of the offense, which has lately been doing enough for this team to come away with victories.

The Pirates will look for the series sweep when they take the field on Sunday afternoon for the final game of this home stand against the Twins.  Jared Jones will be on the mound for Pittsburgh against Bailey Ober for Minnesota.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:35pm.

Record vs. Twins: 2-0

Record vs. American League: 8-13

Record at Home: 16-16

Overall Record: 31-33

As Always…

Let’s Go Bucs!
