The Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers finished off a three-game series Wednesday night, with each team notching a comeback victory during the first two games.  That would not be the case tonight as Milwaukee grabbed the lead in the third and held onto it behind a stellar pitching performance by Brandon Woodruff.

Woodruff tossed 6.1 innings tonight and during that time struck out ten, walked one, and allowed one hit.  The Pittsburgh offense never really threatened at any point, leaving only two men on base.  David Phelps entered the game and struck out the final two batters of the seventh.  The eighth belonged to Devin Williams and after a scoreless inning he handed the ball off to Josh Hader, who picked up his first save of the season.

Joe Musgrove started for the Pirates and was a victim of zero run support.  He lasted 5.2 innings and gave up three runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.  All three of those runs came via the long ball.  The first one came in the third when Ben Gamel hit a 420ft. two run home run to right field.  In the sixth, Keston Hiura hit his second homer of the series this one a 390ft. solo shot to right center.

The Bucco bullpen did their job to keep them in the game over the final 3.1 innings.  Dovydas Neverauskas closed off the sixth with a walk and a strikeout.  Robbie Erlin pitched two innings and struck out three, walked one, and gave up two hits.  The ninth belonged to Richard Rodriguez and he struck out two batters.

Hard to win a game where the offense records only one hit, no matter what the pitching does.  Offense was definitely a big question mark coming into this season for Pittsburgh and we saw why tonight.  The Pirates will have an off day on Thursday before starting a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Friday night at Wrigley Field.
